Cleaning Businesses - Carving Your Niche In The Right Spot

We now have established that the cleaning industry already has a big market to tap, and an emerging market to focus their efforts on. However, because of the considerable size of the market, you will need to research on which particular niche you would like to carve yourself a name in.

The market for residential cleaning alone includes private homes, both large and small, condominiums, apartments, or even rental units that need regular maintenance and upkeep with or without its tenants.  In janitorial services, you will need to ask yourself whether you would like to aim for a steady clientele from business offices, retailers, stores, hospitals, schools, or warehouses.   If you would like to concentrate on cleaning carpets, you would have to decide if you can handle both residential and commercial clients.

Knowing your focus would put other things into the appropriate perspective.  You would know how to market, advertise, and how to plan your finances.  After making your mind up on which sector of the cleaning industry your cleaning service will focus on, you can now look at other things too like locations.  Having a home based cleaning business is an advantage because you will save on rent and travel expenses.  However, if you are into the bigger business of servicing mega companies, you might need to consider an outside office which your clients can visit, and where you could keep your business vehicles and other large equipment as well.

Then you will also need to have a look into the potential market surrounding your home or outside office.  Scouting for clients near you area is ideal at the start so you wouldn’t have to spend too much on transport and gas expenses.

To kick your cleaning business into gear, you can start by tapping people close to your home and your hearts – family and friends.  You can start calling them up and offering your cleaning services to them.  Since you most probably know their working schedules and the state of un-keep their house are in, you are more aware of how to sell your cleaning services to them.

You can also start knocking on neighbor’s doors and giving out flyers and a list of the services you offer with price quotes.  It is important that you maintain the trust and comfort of your neighbors by not taking their time too much so you will need a strategic selling spiel ready.  The menu of services you have prepared can also lessen the time needed for explanation, unless your neighbor invites you in for a cup of coffee to talk about your proposition some more.

A larger group of clientele that you can tap is the associations you are affiliated with or those that have headquarters near you.  There are many members to each of these social clubs, athletic organizations, fraternity and sorority houses, and even church organizations that may need cleaning services or are open to changing the maid or janitorial service they hire currently.
