The business of cleaning has shown an exponential growth in recent years. More than ever, the janitorial and maid service businesses are benefiting from the propensity of other business sectors to down size or cost cut, increasingly relying on janitorial services outside of the company for their clean up needs. Also, with janitorial employees suffering from a high turnover rate, businesses see outsource cleaning services as their best option.
In 2003, a business organization estimated the cleaning and maintaining industry to be worth at least $90 billion. Indeed, cleaning up America’s office buildings, retail, commercial, industrial, educational, and healthcare facilities is turning out to be big business. Its estimated growth annually is placed at 7% growth rate.
Why is this industry coming up with such huge numbers? Here are some of the reasons being offered:
1. Unlike other industries, the cleaning industry is not monopolized by a couple of major companies. Janitorial and maid services seem to be populated with what is called “mom and pop” operations.

3. It is seen to be an easy business to get into, with a very low requirement for technological advancements. Although competition is quite stiff, the upside of this is low contract prices, which means there are more clients than can afford it. Hence, there are more customers that get reeled in and the maid and janitorial services gain more profits.
When you are ready to expand, you do need and high infusion of cash into the business, since you will probably just have to figure in salaries for more employees, extra cash for additional cleaning equipment, and rent for storage space outside of your house.
